Anchor Bay defeats Dakota for first district basketball championship since 1990

The drought is over at Anchor Bay.

Riley Vermander scored 23 points and Ethan Swarts 18 Friday night to lead the Tars to a 54-49 victory over Dakota in a Division 1 district basketball championship game at L'Anse Creuse North.

The MAC Blue Division Tars outscored Dakota 34-26 in the second half to win their first district championship since 1990.

Mark Tocco scored 15 points, Joey Tocco 11 and Xavier Glenn nine for Dakota, a MAC Red team that finished 15-7.

Anchor Bay lost its four previous district finals, including one last year, before meeting Dakota at LCN.

The Cougars had won five consecutive district championships and 14 straight district games before taking on the Tars.

Anchor Bay (14-9), plays Chippewa Valley in a regional semifinal on the Tars' floor Tuesday.

Chippewa Valley advanced with a district-final win over MAC Red co-champion Stevenson at Ford.
